Introduction

In today’s modern society, young people interact with the law much more often than they realize, whether that's through dealing with law enforcement, signing a contract, or even simple school rules. Many lack the legal literacy that they need to understand their rights and responsibilities associated with daily activities. Legal literacy is a person’s ability to understand and interpret the law. It means being aware of your rights and responsibilities in daily activities that are related to the law. Legal literacy is an essential life skill that empowers young people to make informed decisions, protect themselves from exploitation, and participate and advocate for better change. Without a basic understanding of how the legal system works, youth are left vulnerable to misinformation, unfair treatment, and bad decision-making. Therefore, improving and providing legal literacy among young people is crucial for creating informed, responsible, and empowered citizens. 


What is Legal Literacy and Why Do We Need It?

The law ensures social order and stability. Law is a very important part of society because it cannot run smoothly or properly without it. Law maintains order by regulating behavior and addressing wrongdoing, protecting individuals' rights and freedoms, and providing formal mechanisms to resolve disputes, such as courts and arbitration. Beyond this, the law promotes ethics, fairness, and social justice. Law also surrounds our daily lives in ways that young people might overlook. For example, social media use—including posting, messaging, and sharing photos—is governed by laws on privacy, consent, and cyberbullying. Schools similarly rely on legal frameworks and rules to maintain student safety and good behavior. Despite the law influencing nearly every aspect of daily life, many young people remain unaware of its role. This raises an important question: why do so many people lack even a basic understanding of the legal system when it surrounds our daily lives?


Legal Literacy is the ability to understand and interpret laws, legal rights, and responsibilities, and apply the knowledge to our everyday lives. It enables individuals to be aware of when their rights are being violated or exploited. It also comes with an understanding of how our court systems work and how to get legal help. With this knowledge, young people can make informed decisions, avoid legal problems, and participate more in society (voting, running for a political position in the future,e etc.) Unfortunately, even with how much law surrounds our daily lives, a lot of us young people remain unaware of the law’s role in our lives. 


A well-known example illustrates this need: in 2022, a young Black girl in England was illegally strip-searched by police during an exam at her school. The authorities claimed they were searching for cannabis, and the school staff did not intervene. Incidents like this demonstrate the critical importance of knowing one’s legal rights and recognizing when they are being violated.


Reasons for the Lack of Legal Literacy Among Young People

  • Lack of legal education taught: Most of the time, young people are not taught by educators or parents on how the legal system works. As a result of this, a lot stay unaware or uninformed on how the law directly affects their life even after high school or college.   

  • The Young Citizen found that by the time British students reached their Advanced Level exams, only 13% had received formal legal lessons. 

  • The Institute for Citizens and Scholars found that ,regardless of education level, young adults lacked civic literacy(similar to legal literacy, becausecivicl literacy is about understanding how society and government functions which is essential for legal literacy) 

  • Law (jargon) feels complex and intimidating.

Lots of young people believe that studying or learning law is only necessary for law students or scholars, but this is a misconceptio n.Tlawaww is relevant to everyone because understanding it helps individuals know their rights and responsibilities and make informed decisions in everyday life. 

  • Wikipedia reports that juveniles aged 11-15 don’t understand and appreciate their Miranda Rights. don’t appreciate and have trouble understanding the complex vocabulary of Miranda Rights. 

  • The US DOJ found that jjuveniles’understanding of legal jargon was moderate and that they had trouble understanding essential vocabulary. 

Importance of Legal Literacy for Youth

Legal literacy enables young people to:

  • Recognize Rights Violations: Understanding the law allows youth to identify when their rights are being infringed upon.

  • Make Informed Decisions: Knowledge of laws helps individuals avoid legal problems in everyday life.

  • Engage in Society: Legal literacy enables participation in society, such as voting. 

  • Protect Themselves from Exploitation: Awareness of laws surrounding consent, employment, online activity, and contracts safeguards young people.

Solutions to Improve Legal Literacy

  • Legal Education in Schools:  Introduce age-appropriate legal education into schools to ensure that students understand their rights and responsibilities early on.

  • Public Awareness Campaigns: The government can create programs and workshops targeting youth, explaining basic laws and legal processes inan understandable language

Conclusion

Legal Literacy is an essential and vital skill for young people to have. It empowers them to understand and recognise when their rights may be violated, navigate complex legal issues or situations, understand how the law affects their daily lives, and participate in society. The lack of legal literacy in young people in today’s society is primarily because of how little legal exposure young people get. Through solutions to raise awareness and education around legal topics, young people will thrive and know the law in their communities.
